First Harvest Honey from Foxcroft's Beehives & Hand-Thrown Teapot
Did you know that Foxcroft has two beehives on campus? The hives were installed in the spring of 2013 as part of a Wintermission course on beekeeping. A second Wintermission course followed in 2014, and now Foxcroft's Beekeeping Club manages the hives with help from faculty member and beekeeper Terry Meyer. The hives produced enough honey to have the first harvest this year! This jar of honey from the first harvest of honey from the Foxcroft Apiary represents the work of 1,100 bees traveling 112,000 miles and visiting 4.5 million flowers. It is said that if bees were paid minimum wage, a jar of honey would cost $182,000! Truly, honey is liquid gold.
